Klaviyo Buys Agency AI Startup, Names Elias Torres as CPO
Klaviyo acquires Agency, a $32M AI startup founded by Elias Torres, who joins as CPO to lead development of Klaviyo's Composer and Customer Agent AI products.
Klaviyo, the publicly traded e-commerce marketing automation platform, has agreed to acquire Agency, an AI-powered customer success startup founded in 2023 by serial entrepreneur Elias Torres. Agency had raised $32 million from Sequoia, Menlo Ventures, and Felicis before the deal. Torres will join Klaviyo as chief product officer, leading his 25-person team to build out Klaviyo's two AI agents. The acquisition price was not disclosed. The deal also closes a 16-year loop: Torres hired Klaviyo CEO Andrew Bialecki as one of his first engineers back in 2010.

Klaviyo announced on August 5, 2026 that it has agreed to buy Agency, bringing founder Elias Torres in as its new chief product officer. Torres’s team of 25 will focus specifically on Klaviyo’s two AI agent products: Composer, which builds marketing campaigns, and Customer Agent, which handles post-sale tasks like returns and order tracking.
According to Klaviyo CEO Andrew Bialecki, the goal is to bring the combined product to Klaviyo’s current base of 200,000 businesses, with ambitions to reach millions more over the next few years.
Who is Elias Torres?
Torres is not a first-time exit. He co-founded Performable, which HubSpot acquired in 2011. He then co-founded Drift, a conversational marketing platform, and served as its CTO for eight years until Vista Equity Partners bought it for $1.2 billion in 2021. Agency was his follow-on bet, started in 2023 and backed by top-tier venture capital.
The Klaviyo connection runs deep. In 2010, Torres hired a recent Harvard graduate named Andrew Bialecki as one of Performable’s first engineers. Bialecki went on to co-found Klaviyo shortly after, bootstrapping it before raising outside capital. When Klaviyo did its first external seed round in 2015, Bialecki brought Torres in as an angel investor. Torres later watched that bet grow into a $9.2 billion IPO in September 2023.
Why does this matter for e-commerce businesses?
Klaviyo sits on years of behavioral and purchase data from its 200,000+ merchant customers. Bialecki and Torres argue that this data gives Klaviyo’s AI agents a structural edge over dedicated AI agent startups like Decagon and Sierra, which lack that proprietary training signal.
The Composer agent builds and sends marketing campaigns autonomously. The Customer Agent handles the repetitive post-purchase layer: returns, order status, support tickets. Both are early-stage, and this acquisition is explicitly about accelerating their development, not shipping a finished product.
For merchants already using Klaviyo for email marketing and automation, agents that can act on their own customer data are a meaningful step beyond simple send-time optimization. The question is execution speed and accuracy, neither of which has been benchmarked publicly yet.
Our take
This is a textbook acqui-hire dressed up as a product acquisition. Klaviyo is paying for Torres’s judgment and his 25 engineers as much as for any specific Agency technology. That is not a criticism. Hiring a CPO with two major exits and a pre-existing relationship with the CEO is genuinely hard to do through a normal recruiting process.
The competitive framing against Decagon and Sierra is worth watching. Both are pure-play AI agent companies with no legacy platform data. Klaviyo’s argument that owning customer purchase history gives its agents an advantage is plausible, but it depends heavily on whether the agents can actually act on that data in a useful way. We have seen plenty of “data moat” claims collapse when the product ships.
For businesses already deep in the Klaviyo stack, this is a reason to stay patient and keep an eye on the Composer and Customer Agent roadmap rather than bolt on a third-party agent tool right now. If you are evaluating AI integrations for your e-commerce store, it is worth waiting to see how these agents mature over the next two to three quarters before committing to a separate vendor.
The Bialecki-Torres origin story is a good reminder that the best enterprise software deals often start as personal relationships built a decade earlier. Torres mentored Bialecki, Bialecki returned the call as an angel, and now they are running the same company. The loop closed neatly. Whether the product follows is the real story.
What to do about it
- If you use Klaviyo, check your current plan for early access to Composer or Customer Agent betas and sign up if available.
- Audit your post-purchase support workflows now. Customer Agent targets returns and order tracking, so map which tickets are highest volume before the tool ships.
- Hold off on signing long-term contracts with standalone AI agent vendors until Klaviyo’s roadmap becomes clearer, likely by Q1 2027.
- If you are not yet on Klaviyo, compare its agent roadmap against competitors as part of your platform evaluation.
