Claude Cowork Expands to Mobile and Web, Starting with Max Plan Users

Anthropic began rolling out Claude Cowork to mobile and web on Tuesday, opening the AI platform beyond its original desktop-only home for the first time. iOS and Android users can now access Cowork, as can users on the web. The rollout starts with Max plan subscribers and is expected to reach users on other Claude plans within the coming weeks. Anthropic notes that the desktop app on macOS and Windows still delivers the fullest feature set, including local file access.

What happened

Starting Tuesday, Anthropic made Claude Cowork available on iOS, Android, and the web. Before this release, Cowork was only accessible through the Claude desktop app, which runs on macOS and Windows. Now the platform has a significantly wider reach, though not all users get it at the same time.

Anthropic is prioritizing Max plan subscribers for the initial rollout. Everyone else on a Claude plan should get access “in the coming weeks,” according to the company.

One notable infrastructure change accompanies the expansion: Cowork sessions now run in the cloud by default. That means you can start a session on your desktop and pick it up later on your phone, or run Cowork tasks without being tied to a single machine.

What the desktop app still has that mobile does not

Anthropic is clear that the desktop app remains the home of the “full experience.” The biggest gap is local file access. When you run Cowork on the desktop, it can reach files stored on your computer directly. That capability does not carry over to mobile or the web version.

So the platform is more accessible now, but it is not feature-identical across all surfaces. Users who depend on Cowork’s deeper system-level integrations will still need the desktop app for that work.

Why it matters

Limiting a product to a desktop app is a real friction point. A lot of people review work, check progress, or do lighter tasks from a phone. Bringing Cowork to mobile removes a barrier that likely kept some users from adopting it consistently.

The shift to cloud-based sessions by default is arguably just as important as the mobile launch itself. It turns Cowork from a single-device tool into something that follows you across devices, which is table stakes for any modern productivity platform.

For businesses evaluating Claude plans, the tiered rollout is worth noting. Max is Anthropic’s higher-tier subscription. If your team needs Cowork on mobile now rather than in a few weeks, that plan difference becomes a practical consideration.

This is a straightforward and overdue move. Keeping a collaborative AI workspace confined to a desktop app made Cowork feel like a beta feature, even if the underlying capability was solid. Mobile and web access is the minimum bar for serious adoption.

That said, the caveat about local file access matters more than the announcement makes it sound. A lot of the value in agentic AI tools comes from their ability to interact with your actual files and system context. If that only works on desktop, mobile Cowork is closer to a monitoring or review interface than a full working environment. That is fine for some use cases, but businesses should test their specific workflows before assuming the mobile version covers everything they need.

The cloud-session change is genuinely good. It is the kind of infrastructure decision that makes a tool feel professional rather than experimental.

What to do about it

If you are already a Max subscriber, open Claude on your phone or in a browser and check whether Cowork appears in your interface today. If you are on another plan, note that access is coming but may be a few weeks out. In the meantime, map out which of your Cowork tasks actually require local file access and which do not. That split will tell you how much the mobile version can actually replace your desktop workflow versus simply supplement it.
